One would think the Mountain View Mavericks would get some special playoff consideration as the defending 5A State football champions but the 2017 playoff schedule actually favors Coeur d'Alene.

The Vikings, Mavericks, Eagle Mustangs and Highland Rams all received first round buys and all four get to host games this Friday night

It's in the semi finals where the pendulum swings in favor of Coeur d'Alene. If the Vikings beat Madison on Friday night, they'd host the Rigby-Mountain View winner in the semi finals.

How does that work? The Vikings would be 8-2 and host a 10-0 Mountain View team that should have some special consideration as the defending state champs.

Coeur d'Alene would be the only 5A team that didn't have to travel for at least one game. Highland, who hosts Capital Friday night will have to travel next week to either Eagle or Rocky Mountain with a win.

As I see it being the defending state champs should earn you home field advantage.

I asked Mountain View head coach Jud Benedict about the playoff travel and he told me simply, "That's the way it is."

I guess that's how you have to approach it if you have no control over the situation.

By the way, my semi final prediction is:

Mountain View at Coeur d'Alene and Highland at Rocky Mountain.

Just a reminder Rigby at Mountain View this Friday on Sports Radio 630 The Fan kickoff at 7 p.m. as Jared Zabransky and I will have the call.
