Boise State football fans figured this could be a solid season for the Broncos but after the Mountain West media days in Las Vegas the expectations for Boise State may have reached a level of unattainable.

I'm not suggesting anything isn't possible and I believe Boise State could run the table in 2018 but I also believe there are several potential pitfalls.

On the positive side eight Boise State players were named pre-season All Conference Mountain West 1st team. Brett Rypien is the pre-season offensive player of the year and Avery Williams the special teams pre-season player of the year.

Most of all, for the 8th straight year the Broncos are picked to win their division but this year it was unanimous with 22 of 22 first place votes.

Now for the reality check. Boise State opens the year at Troy a team they struggled to beat at Bronco Stadium last year and a team just like BSU that is improved from a year ago.

Two weeks later Boise State is at Oklahoma State. I've been to many games at Stillwater and that is not an easy place to win!

And still in the month of September the Broncos travel to Wyoming to play the Cowboys who have been picked to finish 2nd to Boise State in the Mountain Division.

That's right, all that plus a home game against UCONN all in September!

Not to be a Debbie-Downer, I have no doubt Boise State can win all those games but if they don't, will Bronco Nation fold up the tent by October first?

When expectations are unrealistic, fan reactions are unpredictable. Everyone starts the season anxious for a run to a New Years Six Bowl...If Boise State misses that goal will even a 10-2 season be enough for rabid Bronco fans?

I've always liked it when you sneak up on folks like the Broncos did Oklahoma. Boise State doesn't have that luxury and with all the praise heaped on them this week in Vegas the target on their collective uniforms has become all that much bigger!
