Basketball fans in the state of Idaho were left wondering today...What just happened?

Boise state and Idaho headed to Las Vegas and Reno respectively as the #2 seeds in their post season basketball tournaments.

Idaho faced a 10th seed and Boise State a 7-seed and both were upset! Devastated is more the word as neither team lived up to expectations or quite frankly played as if there was no tomorrow. At least no NCAA tomorrow!

Boise States Chandler Hutchison was basically a no-show in a 78-75 loss to Utah State at the Mountain West Tournament..Even as the Boise media tried to explain how the conference could have overlooked Hutchison as player of the year in the Mountain Wes the NBA hopeful made just 4 of 13 shots from the field and had only 3 rebounds in arguably the biggest game of his college career.

Boise State stayed in the game because Lexus Williams registered a career high 24 points. Williams was the hot hand all night but the last shot was taken by Hutchison who missed the opportunity to force overtime.

Zach Merrill doomed the Broncos with 7 three points and 28 total points. His three pointer at the buzzer to end the half was like an omen. BSU led 40-32 at the break despite the make but Merrill was sending a message that he wasn't done.

Indeed it was only the 3rd game of 21 BSU lost when leading at the half this season.

Meantime in Reno the Idaho Vandals were playing Southern Utah for the third time this yea and the second time in 5 days. Idaho was 2-0 against the Redbirds in the regular season but Southern Utah came out firing on all cylinders, 58% for the game and beat the Vandals 92-78.

The only bright spot for Idaho was Brayon Blake who logged his 12th double-double of the season with 27 points and 12 rebounds.

So now it's wait and see time for both Boise State and Idaho. Will a lesser post season tournament come calling? Could the Vandals and Broncos actually play in the post season? That's a stretch because BSU wouldn't let that happen but it would take the sadness to madness again!

For the time being Boise States 23-8 record and Idaho's 22-9 mark will testify to the solid season both teams enjoyed but for now the records are somewhat hollow in the realm of what could have been!
